Attention to detail in your online content is like the right pinch of salt to complete your favorite dish.
In the era of content overproduction and the information overload we face every day, it seems we’re getting used to considering quantity as the only parameter to work on.
The haste that characterizes our time can also lead us to prioritize content at the expense of form and justify this choice with the old proverb “don’t judge a book by its cover.”
But is that really the case?
1. Start with harmony
There are those who spot every error or flaw obsessively, and there are those who let things slide because imperfections don’t matter.
As often happens in different situations, we can find the truth in the middle or, better yet, in the pursuit of harmony.
Whether it’s a website page, a blog article, or a social media post, we must never lose sight of what our audience expects from our work and what image of ourselves we want to convey.
A grammar mistake, a poor-quality photo, or a misspelled person’s name can chip away at our online credibility and make us appear careless, especially if they’re in the wrong place.
Imagine having to welcome a guest we care deeply about into our home, someone we’d like to stay with us for a few days: we’d have a scented candle waiting in the entrance, a beautifully set table, and we’d lovingly prepare their favorite dish.
Our users, followers, or clients are the guests of our online channels: the ability to create a well-crafted and harmonious environment will encourage a longer stay.
Some practical examples:
- if I run a recipe blog, I must pay close attention to visual and reading harmony in the description of procedures, so that users can understand the instructions effortlessly and perceive that on that site they’ll find recipes that are easy to read and make;
- if my site contains book reviews, it’s imperative to check that publication titles and authors’ names are spelled correctly;
- if I publish articles that include charts and statistics, I must verify that the data is readable and that the legend is always present.
It all seems very obvious, yet if we browse carefully we realize that often it’s the simplest aspects that are least considered and, consequently, least refined.
2. Build a control method
Achieving perfection is neither easy nor immediate, but we get help from the goal we want to reach with our communication: we can start, as we said, from what’s essential for our audience and for us; from here we begin to draft a priority list, which will be the framework on which to build a control method, the checklist for our content.
Useful questions:
- what are my users looking for when they consume my content? (Examples: information, entertainment, learning, escapism);
- what are the most important elements of my content? (Examples: images, sounds, text, colors, quotes, data);
- what characteristic of mine do I want to convey through my online channels? (Examples: precision, expertise, irony, lightness, depth, simplicity);
- what mistake do I consider most serious when thinking about my content?
The answers to these questions provide us with an initial guide to avoid neglecting the most important aspects. The second step is to expand the checklist by adding other details to check.
Why create a checklist? Because when the amount of material to review grows, we can’t rely on memory alone: our attention focuses more easily on the obvious aspects, with the risk of not noticing less evident details.
However, some basic rules remain valid for everyone to create accurate content that is as error-free as possible.
For text:
- check for spelling errors, starting with titles;
- verify first and last names, especially foreign ones (watch out for automatic corrections by writing software);
- verify names of companies, places, and works (always refer to official sources and don’t stop at the first search engine result);
- check punctuation;
- check dates;
- when in doubt about words, consult a dictionary and don’t rely on the language we use in everyday life.
For multimedia content and visual aspects:
- verify the right to publish an image or video or cite the author;
- avoid using too many colors chosen at random;
- don’t cram text and images together;
- check that logos are correct and readable;
- verify that embedded links are working;
- when in doubt, remove rather than add.
Let’s also remember that our brain gets used to what it sees or reads repeatedly, until it no longer notices errors and inconsistencies. If possible, let it rest—let your work sit before final corrections—the “rest” time varies depending on the project’s complexity and the expected deadline—or ask someone else to review it: oversights will surface more easily.
3. Look for a distinctive mark
Precision is already an excellent result, but it’s not everything. Attention to detail is also expressed in the search for a characteristic, a mark or element that can set us apart from others: it’s the ingredient that makes our favorite dish unique and stays in our memory.
It could be a graphic touch, a phrase we use to address our users, an unusual color that represents us, an accessory to wear in every video.
To find our differentiating element, we can use our imagination, as long as we then seek a correspondence between imagination and something achievable and actually applicable to our online project.
Our identity is also told through small things, which is why it’s important to turn to communication professionals, who know how to identify the distinctive characteristics of each project to make it unique and recognizable.
