Google’s SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) are constantly evolving, and the latest major innovation comes with the use of artificial intelligence, particularly with the integration of AI Overview.
At the same time, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) criteria are also changing in parallel. While it was once sufficient to insert a keyword in certain parts of the text, this approach is no longer suitable today.
In the webinar by Neil Patel, co-founder of NP Digital, interesting details emerged regarding this topic. Let’s delve into the most relevant ones!
How Google AI Overview Works
A question that may naturally arise is: How can I appear among the sources that AI Overview uses to provide answers to users?
First of all, AI Overview is primarily activated for informational searches and proposes about 5-8 sources, but this can even reach up to 20. The sites used as sources are taken from the first 10-12 positions in organic search results.
The content that lends itself best to being shown on AI Overview includes:
- Practical guides
- “How to” content
- Tutorials
- Clear, authoritative texts designed for the end user (and not for algorithms)
Currently, AI Overview doesn’t include brand authority among its ranking factors, but it’s evident that well-established sites, like Wikipedia, are cited more often than less known sites. This means that every brand must constantly work on its reputation, both online and offline, regardless of AI Overview or similar systems.
Another fundamental point: AI Overview is giving more and more visibility to geolocalized content as well! Therefore, your Google Business Profile must be constantly updated, optimized, and rich with positive reviews.
We conclude with a very interesting fact: about 67% of the “above the fold” space on Google SERPs is occupied by AI Overview, any featured snippets, and advertisements!
In summary, to appear in Google AI Overview results, it’s no longer enough to do “good SEO”: you need to create truly useful, well-structured content designed for the user. Investing in quality, clarity, and reputation is today more than ever a strategic choice. In a landscape where artificial intelligence selects the sources to show, standing out for authority and relevance can really make a difference.
