In our article “How to Create a Podcast: Which Platforms to Use and Useful Tips” we explored the advantages of creating a podcast and identified the 5 key phases to develop one. The third point concerned publishing a podcast: which platforms to use?
This will be our focus today!
Where to Publish a Podcast: Guide to Hosting and Platforms
Once the episodes are complete, it’s time to publish them!
To distribute a podcast you need a hosting platform that hosts the episodes and distributes them on apps like Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts and so on.
What is podcast hosting?
Podcast hosting allows you to upload the audio files of the episodes and then generate an RSS feed, which is a file that contains all the podcast information: title, descriptions, graphics, etc…
Subsequently, platforms like Spotify receive and read the information in the RSS feed to make the episodes public and distribute them.
Therefore, a podcast is not uploaded directly to Spotify, Apple Podcasts or similar platforms, but to a hosting site, which then communicates with these apps.
How to recognize good hosting?
You need to keep in mind what is offered in terms of:
- Space to upload files
- Available statistics
- Monetization tools
- Episode distribution
- Technical support
Among the most popular podcast hosting platforms we highlight: Spotify for Creators, Spreaker, Buzzsprout, Podbean.
How Distribution Works: The RSS Feed
After uploading the episodes to the chosen hosting platform, the RSS feed must be shared (manually or automatically by the hosting system) to apps like Spotify.
Once the approval process is complete, the show will be available online ready to be listened to!
But the work doesn’t end here: now you need to promote the podcast!
