For years we’ve talked about Meta’s algorithm as if it were a single, central system responsible for deciding what to show and to whom. Today this idea is outdated.
With the introduction of Adaptive Ranking, Meta has completely changed its approach: there is no longer a one-size-fits-all system, but models that work together and are activated based on the individual person and context.
In the past, the operation was simpler and the same for everyone. The same logic was used for every request, without adapting to the individual person.
This was somewhat limiting: the system had to be fast in responses and at the same time precise in decisions, but without really excelling in either aspect. The result was a continuous compromise between speed and quality of decisions.
How Meta’s Adaptive Ranking works
To overcome these limitations, Meta completely rethought how models work together. The structure analyzes each request in real time and decides which model to use.
If the situation is simple, a lightweight and fast model is activated; if instead the behavior is more complex, a more advanced model comes into play, capable of handling deeper analysis.
This change doesn’t just concern model selection, but also how computation is managed. Some user signals are processed only once per request and then reused for multiple ads, avoiding repeating the same steps multiple times and thus reducing the overall workload.
At the same time, the system has been optimized to better leverage available resources, improving efficiency between software and hardware.

The results: more precision and better performance
The impact of these innovations is already tangible. Since launching on Instagram in the fourth quarter of 2025, Adaptive Ranking has recorded a +3% increase in ad conversions and a +5% increase in click-through rate on target users.
This means two things: on one hand users see more relevant and personalized content, on the other advertisers get better results for the same investment.
In other words, the system manages to be smarter without losing speed, increasing overall value for everyone.
What really changes for marketing
This isn’t just a technical update, but a real paradigm shift for the advertising world. For years the focus has been finding the right audience, working on interests, segmentation, and increasingly precise audiences. Today much of this work is automatically absorbed by the system.
The competitive advantage therefore shifts elsewhere: to data quality, signal clarity, and the ability to create content that truly works.
In this scenario, the role of professionals becomes even more central: you need to know how to develop effective creatives, test them quickly, and improve them continuously. It’s precisely these inputs, in fact, that guide the system and allow it to optimize performance.
The future of advertising
Adaptive Ranking isn’t just an update, but the transition from a system with uniform logic to a dynamic one, capable of adapting in real time to each individual user using models of varying complexity.
Meta is making its advertising ecosystem increasingly sophisticated, bringing it closer to a level of understanding comparable to that of the most advanced models. In this scenario, artificial intelligence is no longer just a support tool, but becomes the true decision-making engine of campaigns.
And when the heart of the system changes, inevitably the strategies of those who use it must also change.
