Meta constantly seeks to improve and enhance its resources. Over time, some features may be modified, others replaced, and some completely eliminated.

Shops have also undergone significant changes over the years.

Meta’s shop allows brands to automatically connect their product catalog to Facebook and Instagram, offering an integrated shopping experience with social media.

In this article, we analyze the current state of this tool and how businesses can still make the most of it.

Shop on Facebook and Instagram: Updates for Businesses and Users

In 2023 and 2024, Meta introduced different restrictions depending on geographical areas, affecting both the functioning of shops for businesses and the shopping experience for users.

Changes for Businesses

Some European countries, including Italy, can still use shops on Facebook and Instagram, but the checkout always takes place on the seller’s website. Users can view and purchase products only through tags in posts and ads, but cannot access the shop’s homepage .
In the United States, on the other hand, native checkout has become mandatory for those who want to have an active shop on Facebook and Instagram. Companies must therefore manage orders and payments directly on the platform: if checkout with Meta is not enabled, the shop becomes inactive and products can no longer be tagged in organic posts.
Currently, direct purchasing within the platform on Facebook or Instagram is only available in the United States.

Changes for Users

All people residing in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and the United Kingdom can no longer see the “View shop” button, nor the shop’s homepage. They can only view products tagged in posts and follow the related links to the website.
Moreover, globally, shops are no longer visible from computers on facebook.com nor from web mobile on m.facebook.com. However, users can still see products tagged in posts and complete the purchase on the seller’s website.

After these significant changes, it’s clear how shops, at least in our country, have lost some potential.
Despite all these changes, product tags in posts and ads remain an effective means of showcasing items and driving traffic to the site to generate sales!
