At the foundation of every organization’s identity, there are ideally four fundamental elements: the values map, the vision, the mission, and the corporate manifesto. This article reflects on each of them, respecting their logical order; however, it becomes evident that vision and mission represent the true beating heart of every company.
Defining them clearly and strategically not only contributes to creating the essence of a company, but is fundamental to communicating to the world its values, its objectives, and what kind of commitment is applied for the future.
Where to start then?
As already mentioned, there is a logical order to fit each element: it starts with the founding values of an organization to define both the vision and the mission, up to composing the corporate manifesto.
Let’s discover how to structure the overall system to create a corporate narrative that is coherent, motivating, and effective.
The values map: the roots of every company
Values represent what the company considers important and intends to promote through its activities. They guide corporate behavior, strategic decisions, and relationships.
Defining a company’s values requires a process of deep reflection that involves the corporate staff at all levels. Once outlined, these constitute the common thread that ensures unity of purpose, even in periods of change or difficulty. Values foster a sense of belonging in the work team, strengthen customer trust, and improve corporate reputation.
Creating a values map is the first step to building a vision and a future that are solid: it is a central identity tool, as it clarifies the path taken and helps to plan the future.
This map is preparatory for both the vision and the mission. Starting from here, every element of the corporate identity will be more structured and authentic.
To identify key values, questions like these can be useful:
- What principles guide the company’s decisions?
- What past experiences have shaped our approach?
- What are the priorities we never want to compromise?
The vision: a panorama of the future
For a company, the vision is a glimpse of the ideal world that it would like to realize through its work. To create an effective vision, therefore, one must start from the values, because it is with those that one can look beyond the present, imagining the reality one would like to live in; in this reflection phase, it is very important to actively involve your team as well.
At this point, having created a map of corporate values will facilitate the ideation of both the vision and the mission, as these will start from and be based on the company’s founding concepts.
The vision is the reality we would like to achieve through the difference we feel we make in the world, thanks to our business activity. The vision, therefore, transcends the present and, through our “value lens,” allows us to look at the world as we would like it to be.
An effective vision:
- Should not be self-referential: it looks beyond the company itself.
- It should not focus on the present: imagine an ideal future.
- It should not be static: generate ideas and activities that guide towards the goal.
The mission: the action plan to realize the vision
If the vision represents the goal, the reality you want to create, the mission is the journey to reach them. The mission is firmly grounded and unfolds within the scope of the company’s reality, expressing the credibility of the steps being taken.
The mission concretizes the idealism of the vision in the decisions and actions of daily reality: practicality, strategy, and action come into play.
An effective mission:
- Answers the question “how?”.
- Uses active verbs and a direct language.
- Focuses on the concrete action the company takes.
The company manifesto: the identity voice of your company
Creating a company manifesto means exposing the set of values, vision, and mission of the entire organization. It is about the strong impact of a document that communicates your essence to the world.
Creating a company manifesto is useful and inspirational not only for collaborators, but also for a renewedtalent attraction. Indeed, it engages clients and stakeholders while simultaneously strengthening the company’s positioning in the market.
A well-written manifesto tells:
- Who you are: your identity.
- Where you want to go: the vision.
- How you will do it: the mission.
Defining a map of values, a vision, a mission, and a company manifesto is not just an exercise in style, but a strategic investment for the true success of your brand.
