Whether it’s an advertising video, an Instagram Reel, a TikTok, or content for LinkedIn or YouTube, there are certain principles that can make the difference between content that is ignored and one that truly manages to engage the audience.

Google summarizes them in the ABCD model (Attention, Branding, Connection, and Direction), created to improve the performance of video ads on YouTube but perfectly applicable to any type of video.

Let’s see what they are!

Attention, Branding, Connection, and Direction: the 4 principles of the ABCD method

1. Attention: hook the viewer in the first few seconds

Attention is the most precious resource. Today, users decide in a very short time whether to continue watching a video or scroll to the next piece of content. For this reason, you can get straight to the heart of the topic, avoiding introductions that are too long or unengaging.

Pacing also plays a fundamental role: dynamic images, effective shots, fluid editing, and clear audio help keep the viewer’s interest alive. If you use on-screen text, make sure it supports the message rather than distracting, and choose images that are easily readable on any device.

2. Branding: make your brand recognizable

One of the most common mistakes is showing the brand only at the end of the video. If the viewer stops watching after a few seconds, they might never see the logo or the product.

That’s why I recommend introducing your brand right from the start and maintaining a consistent presence throughout the content. This doesn’t mean filling the screen with logos, but naturally using all the elements that make the brand recognizable: the product, colors, graphic style, tone of voice, and even audio, mentioning the brand name when appropriate.

3. Connection: create an emotional engagement

People remember a story more easily than a simple list of features. Therefore, if you want your video to be effective, you must create a connection with those watching it.

Showing people, telling real stories, or presenting problems and solutions helps the audience identify with the content. At the same time, it is important to keep the message simple and focused, avoiding putting too much information into the same piece of content.

Emotions also play an important role: humor, surprise, curiosity, or suspense are tools that can increase engagement and make the video more memorable.

4. Direction: guide the viewer toward action

Every video should have a specific purpose. Do you want the user to visit a site? Sign up for a newsletter? Follow a profile or buy a product?

Whatever the goal, it is important to communicate it clearly through a Call To Action (CTA). The call to action should be simple, direct, and clearly visible, both graphically and through voice, to guide the viewer to the next step without leaving any doubts.

A good video is born before you press “Rec”

The four ABCD principles remain valid regardless of the video’s goal, but the way they are applied can change.

If the purpose is to increase brand awareness, you will need to capture attention immediately and make the brand easily recognizable from the very first seconds.
If, instead, you want to encourage the audience to consider a product or service, it will be more important to show how it can fit into people’s lives, telling them about the benefits through concrete examples.
When the goal is to drive an action, such as a purchase, an information request, or a sign-up, your Call To Action will need to be even clearer and placed at the most appropriate moment.

In any case, it is not the quality of the camera that determines the success of a piece of content.
Today it is possible to create great videos even with a smartphone: what really makes the difference is the ability to tell a story, keep attention high, create a connection with the audience, and guide them toward an action.
Technique is important, but without a strategy and a clear message, a video is unlikely to achieve the desired results!
