YouTube continues to evolve its AI-powered features. With Ask YouTube, the platform introduces a new search mode that allows users to ask questions in natural language and receive comprehensive answers, enriched with videos, YouTube Shorts, and up-to-date information from the web.

The goal is to make search more intuitive and faster, helping users find the information they’re looking for right away without having to browse through dozens of results.

What is Ask YouTube

Ask YouTube is an experimental feature that transforms traditional search into a conversational experience. Instead of entering simple keywords, users can formulate complete questions, just as they would with an AI-powered assistant.

To generate answers, the system combines content available on YouTube with real-time information from the web. The result is a structured answer that can include text explanations, long videos, Shorts, and clips extracted from the most relevant content.

The experience isn’t limited to finding a video related to the topic, but aims to provide a direct answer, guiding the user through deeper exploration of the subject via suggestions and follow-up questions.

How Ask YouTube works

Once available on your account, Ask YouTube appears as a dedicated button within the YouTube search bar.

After selecting it, you can write a question in natural language, for example asking how to organize a trip, get an explanation on a school topic, or seek advice on a recipe.

The artificial intelligence processes the request and returns an answer composed of several elements:

  • a text summary;
  • relevant long videos;
  • YouTube Shorts;
  • clips extracted from videos with the most relevant point;
  • suggestions to continue the search with new questions.

One of the most interesting aspects concerns the video clips themselves. By hovering over the content, playback automatically starts from the moment deemed most useful for answering the user’s question. This way there’s no need to manually search for the correct passage within a particularly long video.

If the answer obtained isn’t sufficient, you can continue the conversation with new requests, progressively refining the search just as happens with other AI-powered tools.

The feature is also available on compatible smart TVs and consoles, where it can be used both via keyboard and through voice search.

How YouTube Ask works

How videos are chosen

To identify the content to display in answers, Ask YouTube uses criteria similar to those of the platform’s traditional search.

YouTube explains that the system prioritizes relevance to the user’s question, content quality, and the level of engagement generated by the video. The goal is to identify clips that answer the formulated request as precisely as possible.

Currently, playlists and content available exclusively to YouTube Premium subscribers cannot be included in answers generated by Ask YouTube.

Where Ask YouTube is available

Currently Ask YouTube is still in experimental phase.

The feature is only available to a limited number of users in the United States who perform searches in English from computers or compatible TVs. The video-sharing platform has however announced that availability will be progressively expanded.

For now the feature is not available for supervised children’s accounts, in the YouTube Kids app, and on Apple TV devices.

The advantages of Ask YouTube

Compared to traditional search, Ask YouTube allows you to obtain more complete and immediate answers.

Users can describe what they’re looking for using natural language, without worrying about identifying the most effective keywords.

Among the main advantages of the feature we find:

  • the ability to perform conversational searches;
  • answers that combine text, videos, and YouTube Shorts;
  • direct access to the most relevant passages of videos;
  • ability to explore the topic further with follow-up questions;
  • integration of up-to-date information also from the web.

What changes for creators

Ask YouTube also represents a new opportunity for those who publish content on the platform.

According to YouTube, this feature offers an additional pathway through which users can discover creators’ videos. The answers generated by artificial intelligence in fact display content selected based on its relevance to the question asked by the user.

Although the platform hasn’t announced changes to video ranking criteria, the introduction of Ask YouTube could make it even more important to create well-organized, clear content capable of precisely answering the audience’s needs.

An orderly video structure, with accurate chapters and timestamps, can also help make content more easily consultable and facilitate identification of the most useful passages.

How user data is managed

YouTube collects some information related to the use of Ask YouTube, including questions entered and any feedback sent by users.

This data is used to improve the feature and develop new AI-powered services.

The company also specifies that some conversations may be analyzed by human reviewers, but only after being disconnected from the Google account and subjected to automated procedures to remove personal information, such as email addresses and phone numbers.

During this experimental phase, YouTube also specifies that conversations with Ask YouTube are not used to personalize advertising.

A new evolution of search on YouTube

With Ask YouTube, the platform takes a further step toward increasingly intelligent and conversational search.
Instead of simply displaying a list of results, the goal is to offer structured answers that combine text, video clips, and relevant content, helping users quickly find the information they need.

The feature is still in experimental phase and available only to a limited number of users, but represents an important preview of the direction YouTube is taking.

For creators it means a new opportunity to reach audiences through quality content, while for users it could profoundly change the way they search for and discover videos on the platform.
