Instagram continues to focus on artificial intelligence to make content increasingly global. The platform has also introduced automatic voice translations for Reels for the Italian language, a feature that allows creators to transform their videos into other languages thanks to AI-generated dubbing.
The update is part of translations with Meta AI, the system developed by Meta that allows for translating creators’ voices, generating new audio in the chosen language, and automatically synchronizing mouth movements with the new speech through lip sync technology.
How automatic translation for Reels works
To use the feature, the creator must activate voice translation before publishing the Reel.
In the video settings, it is possible to:
- activate the “Translate Reel” option;
- choose the languages in which to make the content available;
- decide whether to also use lip-syncing;
- review the translation before publication.
Once the process is complete, Instagram generates a dubbed version of the Reel, adapting the audio to the new language.
Users viewing a translated Reel will see an indicator signaling the use of Meta AI translation and will be able to choose whether to listen to the translated version or switch back to the original audio.
What are the limitations of Instagram’s AI translation?
Although the results are becoming increasingly realistic, automatic translation for Reels still has some limitations.
Translated versions are not available immediately, but require a few hours after the content is published. Furthermore, the feature cannot be activated on all videos: Instagram may prevent translation when the Reel is too long, when music or background noise makes voice analysis difficult, or when the original audio does not meet the necessary requirements.
Another aspect to consider concerns the control over the final result. The translation is generated by artificial intelligence and, even though the system is capable of replicating the creator’s voice and synchronizing lip movement, there could be differences in pronunciation, accents, or the interpretation of certain phrases, especially in the presence of idioms, jokes, or specific terms.
Furthermore, the feature is not retroactive: it does not allow for the automatic translation of previously published Reels. To use AI dubbing, the option must be activated while publishing new content.
Finally, the feature is not yet available for carousels and stories.
A new opportunity for international marketing
The introduction of automatic translations for Reels could represent a significant change for companies and creators who want to communicate with an international audience.
Until now, creating content in multiple languages required time and resources: it was necessary to record new videos, produce professional dubbing, or rely exclusively on automatic subtitles.
With this new feature, however, even smaller businesses can make their content accessible to users in other countries without having to produce separate versions of the same video.
For example, an Italian company operating in tourism, e-commerce, training, or technology could publish a single Reel and allow foreign users to listen to it in their own language. The same applies to creators and personal brands, who can expand their international audience while maintaining their communicative style.
Automatic translation with artificial intelligence therefore represents a further step towards an increasingly global social ecosystem. Instagram is no longer limited to distributing content across geographical borders but allows users to overcome the language barrier as well.
However, one question remains open: will artificial intelligence be able to fully maintain the creator’s authenticity and personality, or will users continue to prefer the original voice?
In the coming months, it will be interesting to observe how this technology is adopted and what impact it will have on online content production.
